Reading customer wins our competition

After winning a cheque for £28,000 in a special Mercedes-Benz of Reading promotion, John Gatward’s first port-of-call wasn’t the bank but the dealership.

Mr Gatward promised his wife, Barbara, that if we won the competition he would buy her a new car and it looks like he will be true to his word after he returned to the Richfield Avenue retailer the morning after his success.

“I mistakenly said that if I won I would replace Barbara’s existing Mercedes-Benz A-Class which is four-years-old,” explained Mr Gatward, who runs his own packaging equipment business. “I never thought I would win but now I’ve got to keep my promise so I’ve already enquired about a new model.”
Mr Gatward joined other customers from Mercedes-Benz of Reading and its sister sites in Ascot, Maidenhead and Slough, where the tense promotion finale was held. All had purchased C-Class vehicles from the retailers between July and September and were given the chance to win back the invoice value of their car.

Participants had to pinpoint the position of a tyre in a photo of a Formula One crash. As Mr Gatward’s guess was the closest, he was refunded the £28,000 he paid for his C 220 CDI Saloon in September.

“We’re absolutely over the moon as it’s not every day that you get a Mercedes-Benz for free,” he added.

“There was also a touch of irony about the win as after owning Mercedes-Benz for the past 12 years, I fancied a change and had ordered a car with another prestige dealership locally. However when they messed me about, I cancelled the order and returned to Mercedes-Benz of Reading, where I ended up getting a fantastic car for nothing.”
