The AMG story

The AMG story
In the beginning...
The carefully crafted AMG range we present today is the result of a partnership spanning 40 years of engineering success.

Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher, the founders of AMG, first created a racing engine for the Mercedes-Benz 300 SE in 1965. The phenomenal success of their engineering led to a series of collaborations between the two companies, with escalating success on the track.

In 1982, the renown of the AMG pedigree spread to the road, with inclusion of AMG design on the 500 SEC AMG luxury coupé.

Spurred on by success, the AMG company grew in size and accomplishment, forging a business partnership with Mercedes-Benz motorsport in 1988, and the first official cooperative agreement between Daimler-Benz and AMG in 1990.

1993 saw the release of the C 36 AMG - the first vehicle fully developed in collaboration between Mercedes-Benz and AMG.

Continuing success on and off the track has cemented the partnership between AMG and Mercedes-Benz, culminating in a full integration of the two companies. In 2005 DaimlerChrysler became the sole stakeholder in Mercedes-AMG GmbH, and since then Mercedes-Benz has created a range of AMG models showcasing our prestige performance engines and cutting edge design.

Today's AMG engines are designed and hand finished to an extremely high standard, as befits our history of quality and care. We bring the same precision building and innovative design to our AMG models now as we did forty years ago. So each vehicle embodies power, performance and prestige - the essence of AMG.
