Ousedale School Young Enterprise

School earn top two places in the Programme Finals

Teams from Ousedale School in Newport Pagnell took first and second places overall at the Milton Keynes Young Enterprise Company Programme finals, held at Shenley Brook End School on 28th April. Both Company teams ‘Mute' and ‘MK TROGS’ will go through to the County finals to be held at the Open University on 15th May.

Nine teams competed in the finals from four local schools; Sir Frank Markham, Shenley Brook End, Ousedale and Stantonbury Campus. The teams were judged in categories comprising; Best Trade Stand, Best Product or Service, Best Marketing, Green Award, Company Report and Presentation. In addition, a special Community Award was presented. The panel of judges was drawn from local business and community managers.

The Company Programme started last September with thirteen teams of 6th formers from schools across Milton Keynes starting companies by electing a board of directors, selling shares and developing a product or service and then going to market. The programme gives the students the opportunity to work with business advisors outside of the school and to gain invaluable business experience.

The first place team called their company Mute, designing and printing tie dye clothing from t/shirts to fancy underwear. Their excellent team structure, marketing and presentation skills were lifted with strong support from their Business Advisor, Neil Muxlow from Affinity Business Connections. Second place team, MK TROGS (The Really Original Gift Specialists) applied an original love MK logo, with an environmental twist to a range of products including mugs and t/shirts. Both teams made a small profit from their original investment and both are still trading.

The Young Enterprise Company Programme has been well supported by local business offering advice and sharing experiences and best practise. Keynote Speaker at the Finals was Warren Brearley, Managing Director of local retailer Mercedes-Benz of Milton Keynes. Warren gave a snapshot of how his business remains successful through tough financial times and he will host a boardroom lunch for the winning team in June providing chauffeur driven cars to transfer the students to and from school.

The evening was further endorsed by a visit from the Mayor of Milton Keynes Councillor Jan Lloyd. In her highly motivational speech she congratulated all of the teams and the organisation and wished them every success in the Buckinghamshire round.

Alan Bullen, Chair of Milton Keynes Young Enterprise Company programme said,” We are delighted with the success rate of all the teams that have participated this year; the final nine teams showed great spirit and creativity in their final presentations. It would inspire us all if one of our two teams gain further success in the County Finals. They may even go all the way to International success.”
