New UK Child Seat Regulations

The Mercedes-Benz Child Safety Programme

New child seat regulations
From the 18th September 2006, new regulations came into force governing the use of child car seats.

In essence, the new regulations stipulate that children travelling in any motor vehicle MUST use the child restraint (baby seats, child seats, booster seats and booster cushions) which is appropriate for their age and weight.

The table below summarises the key changes:

Up to 3 years

Correct child restraint for the weight of the child must be used

From 3rd birthday up to 135 cms in height or 12th birthday – whichever is reached first

Correct child restraint must be used

Where seat belts are fitted, correct child restraint must be used

Child over 135 cms in height or age 12 or 13

Seat belt must be worn if available
